MIRACLES

DOCUMENTARY / A 2008 / IMX / 45 MINUTES
A film by Peter Beringer

SYNOPSIS

In Placanica, a small town in the southernmost part of Italy known for an apparition of Mary, numerous “miracles” are to have occurred there during the last 40 years: heavenly fragrances, levitations, visions, healings. The church has sent out scientists and theologians to investigate this phenomenon. The film portrays the pilgrims and the residents and tells about their experiences. Theologians, scientists, philosophers, including quantum physicist Anton Zeilinger, parapsychologist Eberhard Bauer, Roman theologian Guido Mazzotta, Josef Imbach, who has been barred from teaching theology by the church, and the Vienna theologian Wolfgang Treitler, present their views about the possibility and impossibility of the miracles. The stories are set in Placanica and Rome, Freiburg im Breisgau, Innsbruck, Vienna and St. Wolfgang. Creator is Peter Beringer, who has dealt with the border lands of religion in films for many years.
